Signs your door needs a repair

Most garage door failures announce themselves before the door stops completely. If you notice any of these, a repair now is usually cheaper than the breakdown later:

  • The door stops halfway or reverses on its way down
  • It shakes, grinds or squeals while moving
  • One side sits lower than the other, or the door looks crooked in the opening
  • A cable hangs loose, or a roller has come out of the track
  • The opener runs but the door does not move, or it moves much slower than before
  • Daylight shows around the edges when the door is closed

What a repair visit covers

The technician checks the whole system, not only the part that failed: springs, cables, rollers, hinges, tracks, the opener and the safety sensors. Worn rollers, frayed cables, bent track sections and misaligned sensors are replaced or adjusted on the spot. If the problem is a broken spring or a dead opener, they will tell you before doing anything else, since those are priced differently.

What affects the price

A repair call has two parts: the service fee for the visit and diagnosis, and the parts and labor for the actual fix. Rollers, hinges, cables and sensor realignments sit at the low end; track replacement and panel work cost more because of the material. Evening, weekend and same-day calls usually carry a surcharge, so ask whether the door can wait for the next regular slot.

Common questions

If the door moves evenly and nothing is hanging loose, yes, with care. If a spring is broken, a cable is off, or the door is crooked, do not operate it with the opener: the motor can bend the door or pull the cable drum, and the repair gets more expensive.

Usually, if the panels are sound. Rollers, cables and springs are consumables and replacing them makes an older door run like new. When several panels are damaged or the door is no longer safe, companies will suggest a replacement instead, and you can ask for both quotes.

Clear space around the door inside the garage, keep the car out of the opening if possible, and have the opener remotes at hand so the technician can test everything before leaving.
