Garage door spring replacement
A snapped spring leaves the door too heavy to lift. Get quotes from companies in your area that replace torsion and extension springs, often the same day.

How to tell the spring is broken
- You heard a loud bang from the garage, like something heavy falling
- The door will not lift, or the opener raises it a few inches and stops
- There is a visible gap in the coil of the spring above the door
- The door feels extremely heavy when you try to lift it by hand
- The cables look loose or have come off the drums
Springs do the lifting; the opener only guides the door. When a spring fails, the opener is suddenly asked to move the full weight of the door, which it cannot do safely. Stop using it until the spring is replaced.
Torsion or extension springs
Torsion springs sit on a bar above the door and are the standard on most doors installed in the last twenty years. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side, usually on older or lighter doors. Both wear out after a set number of cycles, typically 10,000, which is seven to ten years of normal use. When one spring of a pair breaks, companies generally recommend replacing both: the other has the same age and will fail soon.
What affects the price
The quote depends on the spring type, the door weight (a double insulated door needs heavier springs than a single steel one), whether one or both springs are replaced, and the timing of the visit. Ask whether the price includes rebalancing the door and checking the cables, which should be part of the job, and how many cycles the new springs are rated for: high-cycle springs cost more but last two to three times longer.
